our food
resources for teaching
MODULE 1: WE LOVE OUR FOOD introduces children to where our food comes from, where our food goes, and how we can eat healthy. We go beyond the grocery store and learn how to eat the rainbow.
We’ve compiled websites and resources below that may be of benefit if you’d like to learn more, expand content, adapt for different classrooms, or directly address food waste and scarcity.
Eat the Rainbow
With PBS Kids, explore all the colors to learn what foods are healthy and why different colors support our brain and body in different ways. This is also a really way to create a list for what to plant in the garden.
Composting at School
Kids love to compost, so when you’re ready to make that leap into chocolate cake soil, check out all the resources that Grades of Green offers with a toolkit designed with manageable timelines and ways to engage children in the process.
Reduce Food Waste
Learn all about reducing food waste with the World Wildlife Fund. You can download lessons and actives by grade level, and your audit can help WWF compile results and research.
Vermicomposting
Children love worms, and worms love turning waste in black gold. When you’re ready to bring vermicomposting (inside or outside), head to Uncle Jim’s Worm Farm to buy all you need—even the red wigglers!
FoodPrint
“Whether it’s a salad, a hamburger… your meal has an impact on the environment and on the welfare of animals, food/farm workers and on public health,” which is what FoodPrint helps us to understand.
